Ecosystem Ponds are constructed with an EPDM rubber waterproof membrane and are built with boulders, pebbles and aquatic plants. These are usually designed with a natural looking waterfall with plenty of habitat for the fish in the form of fish caves, aquatic plants and maybe even a log or stump. Here is a bespoke little ecosystem pond that I designed and installed in 2019. It was a pleasure to build and it has been a tranquil oasis for our customer! The pond is an Aquascape Ecosystem pond, 3m x 3m with a 4m stream. It is currently the home of 2 x koi fish.

How an Aquascape Ecosystem Pond Works
If you are looking for a natural looking fish pond you really cannot go past an Aquascape Ecosystem Pond. Designed and specified by Aquascape, Inc. in the United States, the components and associated training that come with these products make for a simple water feature construction that is naturally beautiful and easy to maintain.
The main components that set these systems apart from other products and methods is the Signature Series Skimmer and Biofalls filters. The skimmer is uniquely designed to house the pond pump and creates a suction effect across the surface of the pond, drawing surface debris such as leaves, twigs and uneaten fish food into the skimmer basket for collection. The pump is separated from the rest of the pond by a pre-filter foam mat that removes any additional debris that is not caught in the skimmer basket. This system safe-guards the pump from solid debris that could clog up and burn out the pump.
The Signature Series BioFalls filter is an up-flow biological filter that also doubles as a header tank for a waterfall or stream system. Water is pumped from the skimmer to the to of the system, where it is passed through several filter matts and bio-balls before it is returned to the pond in a beautiful waterfall.

Being in a bush acreage setting with a lot of space we were weighing up a large concrete pool for quite a while, having previously had mineral pools. Then a friend put us onto a natural style recreation pond which we had never seen before. As soon as we saw the visual look of the pond and idea around them, we had our heart set on one! The fact it's fresh water, with no chlorine or chemicals, and when jumping in it feels like you've dove into a fresh waterhole or stream. We are constantly doing work around the property and just strolling over and flopping in which is extremely refreshing without wanting to get out! We are in May now, and still swimming in it so the fact we can use it all year round is unbelievable.
Brad and team set out with a plan in place at the start that only got better and better in terms of concept and design throughout the build and what we have ended up with is incredible and we can't help but stare at it everyday. The elevated bank with water feature at the top and wrapping around the pool as well as the large waterfall that you could just sit around all day listening to is beyond expectation. The advice and updates throughout the build to educate us on the process were on point and the team were a great bunch of really nice guys that we had a ball with throughout the build. Brad's also been back on numerous occasions post build checking in and assisting with any questions/sorting any minor issues which has been really impressive as well. We would 100% suggest anyone looking to build a recreation pond to hit this team up with their professionalism and quality being over and above.
